International Fantasy Hair Competition comes to NH

Fantasy Hair Competition

On April 22, 2010, at 7:00pm, the Verizon Wireless Arena will overflow, inundated by piqued spectators and hairstylists from across the country in a glam dash for the top prize of $7,000! Not only will we see stylists representing New Hampshire, these devotees of coiffure will be flocking to Manchester from Michigan, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maine, Texas, Connecticut and beyond, seeking the ultimate venue to display their hairtistic abilities!  This revel of a runway show comes all trussed (or is that tressed?) up, with spotlights, beats and beautiful models, and every red-headed cent goes to help fund the Food Bank’s fight against hunger across New Hampshire.

Do you have your ticket yet? Special: While supplies last, buy 4 or more tickets through the Food Bank for just $25 each!  Email adalton@nhfoodbank.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to claim yours today!

When you make your appearance at the arena on the eve of the show, you’re swept into the arena down to your seat (right on the floor if you’re a VIP ticket holder, so close those trusses might just tickle your nostrils), you’ll witness the tension, the mood of the pre-spectacle: the darkened stage, awaiting the amazing grace of immaculately conceived miracles of hair art.

When the clock strikes 7, it’s showtime; the lights turned way down low, music swelling to fill the air, and the models descending from the firmament to bless the catwalk.  Their towering trusses, elaborately constructed coifs, and looming locks will turn your view of gravity upside down, make you crane your neck so much you might get whiplash, and enthuse you to unfurl your own sails and set off for the Port of Call (the creative theme for this year’s show) each design pays homage to.

Our tenacious stylist contestants spend hundreds of hours and dollars to concoct, distill and refine their entries.  They swoop into the arena by 9 on the morning of the grand exhibition, and work frenziedly and hurriedly splitting hairs until their pieces become piece-de-resistances.  As you boggle at each entry and ogle the close-ups on the gigantic screens flanking the runway, you might find yourself particularly wrapped up in your favorite designs – maybe even literally, if you’re lucky – and pulling for your favorite ‘do to win (though I’m sure the models would prefer the pulling to remain figurative)!

After you’ve been brought back from the transcendent tresses by intermission, you’ll get shot to the moon by a rogue’s gallery of fabulousness once again as all of the models own the catwalk at once, one more time.  Here’s hoping you skipped the manicure, because you’ll be chewing on your nails as you await the judges’ final verdict, the tension of the stylists and models melding with your own as you await the MC’s announcement.  Then, the crescendo, the elation of the winners as they are announced, their triumph electric in the air, the jolt cascading through the judges, models, stylists, and you in the audience.  Of course it’s never just about the money; victory represents a vindication of the stylist’s artistry, verve, daring and talent.

Basking in the afterglow of the show, you’ll find your way across the street to the post-show party in Café on the Park (right inside the Radisson Hotel), where you’ll get to gawk at the designs at ground level, and express your awe at the aptitude and beauty firsthand.  Share a drink and a tale with a model and stylist; you might learn a thing or two about their struggles under the dim lights that wouldn’t be revealed in the floods.  It’ll be amazingly entertaining.

Info About Our CRUDEM – Our Event Beneficiary

Against the back drop of the Boston International Film Festival, talents from the entertainment industry join forces to benefit Haitian Relief and CRUDEM/Hôpital Sacré Coeur. This hospital has been a beacon of hope to the Haitian people, and has provided uninterrupted service for 23 years thanks to the dedication and seflessness of the founders and volunteers who have given so generously their time, resources and skills. With less than 100 beds and only 2 operating rooms, Hôpital Sacré Coeur has been inundated with the treatment of victims from the massive earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12th, 2010. Hôpital Sacré Coeur‘s ability to handle the most severe cases found itself the epicenter of treatment. Its’ staff, volunteers, blood bank, pharmacy, pediatric wing, on-site lab and mobile clinic have been stretched to incomprehensible limits. Since the devastation, many have made the pilgrimmage with their wounded to HSC by whatever means available, in a country where a bicycle is a luxury. That number has increased exponentially with Naval and US Coast Guard arrivals of patients in desperate need of care. A MASH-type of operation was quickly set up using classrooms from an adjacent school as dormitories, soccer fields as runways, and banana groves as a “tent city” housing over 300 cots. At the peak, over 90 volunteers were treating 500+ patients taking 25 to 50 cases per day on 3-4 hours sleep. The recovery and restoration of Haiti and its‘ people has just begun, there is much to do, and support has never been so urgently needed.

An example of where your donation goes:

• $100 can buy antibiotics to combat infections

• $200 can buy food for patients

• $500 can provide prosthetics for earthquake victims

• $2,500 can secure urgently needed lab supplies

• $5,000 can assist with the costs of orthopedic operations

But make no mistake, every dollar helps keep the medical resources available to the people of Haiti, supporting the outreach programs, mobile clinics and the rehabilitation needs of those who survived.

It is our sincere hope that you will join us for a wonderful event for a great cause. For more information about The CRUDEM Foundation and Hôpital Sacré Coeur please visit www.CRUDEM.org.

Penuches Grill – Manchester, NH

Thirsty Thursday Penuches

Penuche’s Grill Manchester New Hampshire

Penuche’s (formerly the New Cheese Grill) has a typical bar atmosphere with table & booth seating (self seating), red pool table, Foosball table, TVs, and live entertainment on some nights. FUN, FUN, FUN!!!

Sometimes, we sit outside along the sidewalk patio. The good pub menu includes appetizers, soups & salads, sandwiches, burgers (veggie too!), steaks, chicken, seafood, pasta dishes, kids menu, and desserts.

The FRIED PICKLES ($5-five dill pickle spears, corn meal breaded, deep fried, & served with cool horseradish sauce) are sooo good and very clean that we end up getting two orders. Be careful, the pickles come out very hot.

The half-pound sirloin burgers served with fries & pickle are pretty good. I enjoy the Chicken Parmesan ($11-very hearty sauce over pasta) and the Shrimp Scampi ($13-lots of lemon butter & garlic), both served with garlic bread. Good sized portions!!

For dessert, the Ultimate Chocolate Cake ($4) is very HUGE and very sweet!! The Tollhouse Brownie Sundae ($4.50) with vanilla ice cream & fudge is very sweet and refreshing. Be careful, on my last visit, the brownie was soft towards the center and very hard along the edges-ouch!!!

The service here is good, attentive, and friendly, offering reorders on beer & cocktails and free refills on Pepsi fountain drinks. The servers here are very knowledgeable and make recommendations regarding the food offerings and the drinks at the bar.

Vegas Temper

VEGAS TEMPER – Rock & Roll!

“Mixing hard rock hooks with clever lyrics and a frontman to rival Scott Weiland, these boys from Manchester New Hampshire are destined for the big time.

Their new album, entitled “Molotov Season” explodes from your speakers with the radio ready hit “Shotgun”.

The rest of the album does not disappoint, blending pieces of old rock heroes like led Zeppelin with newer acts such as Switchfoot and Godsmack.

A clear winner from the north east and a band to be reckoned with for years to come!” – Popcore.net

Formed in late 2004, Vegas Temper has emerged as one of New England’s most requested rock sensations. Compared to the likes of Velvet Revolver and Stone Temple Pilots, their straight-forward approach and strong rock anthems have continued to establish them a die hard following throughout the region.

They’ve shared the stage with Korn, Cold, Tantric, Shinedown, Lacuna Coil, Dropbox, Staind, Tesla and many others.

Their #1 selling 2005 CD Novocaine continues to thrill in the live set, and the band’s latest, Molotov Season, is in stores now.

Firefly American Bistro & Bar – Manchester, NH

Fireflymanchester_NHNN

Firefly American Bistro & Bar

Firefly embraces the concept of comfort dining by offering inspired classic American fare in a warm, inviting atmosphere.

The menu is a reverent celebration of the American culinary tradition. It was carefully crafted to appeal to a broad segment of a growing, healthy market. It features classics, prepared exactly as they should be, and artistic dishes modestly described in an unintimidating fashion.

The dining room is best described as casual yet elegant. Ambient lighting reveals hues of amber, merlot, and earthy greens. White linen covered tables adorned with simple tea lights offer a hint of sophistication during evening hours. Inviting private booths and cozy banquettes epitomize the comfort theme. An optimal setting for anything from business luncheon to first date.

The lounge is more than the ideal spot for a pre or post-dinner cocktail. It is a destination of its own. Modestly upscale, it is the perfect place for office gatherings, reuniting with friends or sharing a bottle of wine with someone special.

A tempting lounge menu (available until midnight) will offer sharing plates perfect for the after-work crowd, and lighter fare for post-show or late night diners.
